Even before we met to worship for the first time as a community of believers, Marco had developed this logo. When Marcia originally saw this image she could immediately imagine her friend Jodi creating a unique cross out of wood that would one day be displayed at our church.
Shortly after moving in to our current facilities, our landlord called me; “something is missing” he stated – we need a cross on our building to further transform it into a Christian Church…. He suggested a cross or something above the front door that could be seen from a distance that would draw people in!
For most of the first millennium, the most prevalent image used in this new church was that of a shepherd – Christ was depicted as the Good Shepherd. In many languages the word used for shepherd, is pastor.
By the second millennium, the cross [with the crucified Christ on it] was the predominant symbol being used by the church. Near the end of the second century most Protestant Christian Churches displayed an empty cross, since we worship a Risen Christ.
I have personally been drawn to the image of a lighthouse to further symbolize Christ’s drawing affect – During calm times, very few people [if any one] visits a lighthouse. But during those turbulent stormy times we are drawn to safety by its guiding light.
A refuge where we can re-group until once again its safe to return to navigate the waters of life.
When I first saw what Marco had developed I immediately saw a fresh new symbol which expressed New Hope and New Life for All OF God’s People..
May Christ always remain at our Center – New Hope Christian Center!
